There’s no shortage of tools for learning today. Note-taking apps, diagramming tools, AI assistants, and now agents that promise to do far more than just help you think. With so many options it’s easy to keep adding tools without ever being sure they’re actually helping.

I ended up writing this, in part, to clarify my thoughts on tool selection, and why maintaining a small, intentional setup has meant more to me than the chase for capability.

Knowing How to learn

“Before tools enter the scene learning has an architecture imposed by cognitive limitations.”

The capacity of working memory is limited; abstraction has a price; and meaning is realized only in the process of reassembling, rather than consuming, information.

Very simple self-analysis or questionnaires can lay bare these patterns, how quickly abstraction becomes usable, where problems of cognitive overload tend to appear, whether understanding can be improved by restructuring, repetition, or refinement. Then tool choice becomes easier to reason about, not react to.

Setting Goal and Control

Tools in 2026 can do a lot, but their capabilities can backfire if they start driving your learning instead of supporting it. Without clear Goal Setting, it’s easy to let the tools dictate what to focus on, how to organize ideas, or even what counts as progress.

The first step is setting clear, specific goals. Cognitive research shows that learning improves when objectives are concrete and measurable, vague targets like “Be good at X” rarely stick.

Defining what “good” or “proficient” means, whether you can explain it, apply it, or use it to solve a problem, reduces cognitive load and guides attention.

Obsidian : The Backbone

Obsidian is more than a note-taking app, it’s a learning system.

Everything is markdown now, like AI responses, which works with Obsidian, and it works locally, keeping data under your control.

Its graph view and bidirectional links make connections between ideas explicit.

The community plugin library extends functionality without forcing unnecessary complexity. By structuring notes as interconnected nodes, Obsidian helps build understanding and retention instead of just storing information.

NotebookLM and Excalidraw

The response is based of the material you provide

NotebookLM helps organize dense material by summarizing notes and highlighting patterns. It works best when you already know what’s important, making it easier to review and connect concepts without getting lost in details.

Excalidraw makes it easy to visualize ideas that are hard to track in text. Flowcharts, diagrams, and concept maps turn abstract or complex information into something easier to understand and connect.

Together, these tools turn information into structured knowledge, supporting comprehension and problem-solving instead of passive accumulation

Final Remarks

This is what has worked for me. Keeping a small set of tools, Obsidian, NotebookLM, and Excalidraw, helps me stay organized and understand ideas without getting distracted.

Each tool supports my learning in a specific way, and together they make it easier to keep focus on the work itself rather than the tools.
